ERA Calculation

ERA calculation turns a pitching line into a normalized Earned Run Average for one regulation game.

Calculation formula

ERA = earned runs x game length / IP. Use 9 for most baseball games and 7 for many softball games.

Calculation example

A pitcher gives up 3 earned runs over 7 full frames in a 9-frame baseball game. The calculation is 3 x 9 / 7 = 3.86.

Partial frames

Scorebook notation uses .1 for one out and .2 for two outs. Convert those outs to thirds before completing the calculation.

Use the baseball ERA calculator for 9-frame games, the softball ERA calculator for softball, or the ERA calculator 7 innings page for any 7-frame format.
